Forever Young

Labels: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Hidey Ho from the top of the world. It's your boy back on the keys giving you the real and honest truth. I come to you guys with a little of a heavy heart. We lost yet another musician too soon. Singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse was found dead in her apartment this morning. While they don't have a cause of death just yet many are speculating she finally lost her battle with her demons and overdosed. Winehouse was 27 years old, that alone is sad but that fact puts her in a rather elite and sad group called The 27 Forever Club.

The 27 Forever Club is a list of musicians that passed away at the tender age of 27. The official list has 15 artist but the most notable ones are Brian Jones(Rolling Stones), Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and now Amy Winehouse. All these artist have an eerie similar lifestyle. They all lived that Rock n Roll life of sex, drugs, and rock n roll. Also they all had a serious self-esteem problems. Kurt Cobain fought bouts of depression, Joplin never thought she was pretty enough, Jim Morrison was looking for that family, freedom, and acceptance, Brian Jones had many mood swings which we know as being Bi-Polar now, Jimi was looking for that sense of love, and Winehouse just could not escape the demons in her life. All came from a broken home and all changed the way we listen and look at music.

Now that we got y'all up to date on them here is my opinion. I believe that all of them were a victim of there success. There is no way that no one in their camps that didn't notice the self-destruction of these artist. I mean if us the public saw it why couldn't they? I mean seriously just because they made incredible music that redefined their generation we suppose to overlook that they were killing themselves. Brian Jones started the Rolling Stones and he did every drug under the sun and when it got out of control what they do get him help nope dismissed him from the group. Jimi kept acid tabs in his bandanna on stage, no one stopped him. Janis Joplin liver was a liquor store and no one said a thing. Cobain and Winehouse took it to the next level and even wrote songs about their pain that went ignored.

On the bright side their names will go down in history for their music just as much as their demise. The Rolling Stones are legends in music they still tour today. Jimi Hendrix is loved worldwide, thousands flock to his grave site a year and is considered by many as the greatest guitarist of all time. The  Doors are legends in their own right, many bands cover their songs. Janis Joplin paved the way women were viewed in music, which open doors for artist like Pink, Eve, Madonna, and many opinionated women. Nirvana was the group that kept the grunge movement moving. After Cobain's death the group disbanded and and made two incredible groups Foo Fighters and Hole. Even though they are gone their influence is seen and felt to this day. As for Amy Winehouse it's too soon to see where her name will fall at in the music universe but wherever she may lay one thing is for sure her struggle is over and hopefully she can rest in peace.

A Band Together: Guitar Heroes

Labels: , , , , , , , , , ,

What it do world it's your boy Molo back at it again. I know it's been a while but the world is a crazy place. Without further delay here is the newest mini-series from the Sarcarrogance brain trust. Now I been watching all these greatest list and I was thinking to myself they never put a rock list together. I seen Vh1's mockery of a 100 greatest artist list. So I decided to put together a not a list per say but an Uber Band from the major components of a band: Guitar, Lead singer, drummer, keyboards, and misc. The first up is the guitarist, they are in front as much if not more than the lead singer. To be a great guitarist you must exude sex appeal, confidence, arrogance, and uniqueness. Let me tell you this was a hard decision I started with like fifty and it took me two weeks to get it to six. These aren't in no particular order but there is a winner. Here we go:

Jimi Hendrix

Considered by most as the greatest to ever touch the electric guitar. Jimi had a short career but his impact is still felt today. From movies to commercials his music surpassed his 27 years he was on this earth. Most famous for is his Woodstock Star Bangled Banner rendition. So unique his chords are one of the most difficult to mimic. He played from the his soul and his soul sounded good.

Joe Perry

Joe Perry is the epitome of a rocker. He lived his life hard sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll and came out clean on the other side. His career spans four decades. He gain popularity in a little group called Aerosmith you might of heard of them. Highlight of his career was the halftime show at Super Bowl XXXV. Joe holds his own and is just as known as Aerosmith front man and friend Steven Tyler. When he did it he made it look good.

Slash

From the hair to the top hat to the leather pants Sam "Slash" Hudson is what a rock star is. Heavily influenced by blues and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Slash has an ear for music. His first time playing the guitar was Tangerine off the Led Zeppelin III album. With insane solos and amazing riffs Slash is the man. Not only did he make it big with one group but three different groups. It's hard to see anyone touching his talent.

Chuck Berry

The godfather of Rock-n-Roll point blank period. Chuck been making music since 1955 and touring nonstop since 1980. Everyone from The Beach Boys to The Rolling Stones covered his songs. His classic "duck walk" and vibrant guitar riffs changed how the world saw how music was made. Chuck had the right idea music is suppose to be fun and entertaining example with his song "My Ding-a-ling". Constant showman we can learn a lot from him.

Jimmy Page

Revered by many as the most influential and versatile guitarist in Rock history. He is the second music digitally sampled artist behind only James Brown. Inducted in to the hall of fame twice withe The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin.
According to MSNBC Jimmy Page "played some of the most fundamental and memorable guitar in rock history—from the heaviest crunch to the most delicate acoustic finger picking." He is the mayor of the nut house.

Kirk Hammett

Kirk is a member of what some say is the "Kings of Metal" Metallica. His swagger on stage is unparalleled to any after him. Hammett's playing style is noted for his extensive use of the wah-wah pedal in his solos. Hammett says "The wah-wah is an extension of my personality." Hammett's use of the wah-pedal hadn't been featured in recent Metallica solos, but has seen a resurgence in his solos on the newest album, Death Magnetic, in song like The Unforgiven III. He is most known for the riff on "Enter the Sandman". He played hard and made no apologies now that's how it's suppose to be.

Honorable Mention: Dimebag Darrell, David Gilmour, K.K. Downing, John Lee Hooker, Prince, Muddy Waters, The Edge, Flea, Rod Price, Keith Richards

Now that you have seen my opinion I repeat my opinion of my top six guitarist are. Make your list and let me know who you like. Now I know you are asking, so who is the cream of the top? Well the winner is:

Black History Moment

Labels: ,

What's good world here is your Black History fact for the week.

Years Before Dred Scott, this Determined Lady Sued for Her Freedom. Mum Bett came into this world about 1748. She was born a slave, owned by Peter Hogebooma Dutchman, who lived in Claverack, New York. Bett was raised and served here until she was 33 years old. At this time in 1781, during the American Revolution, she had gone to Sheffield, Massachusetts, where she now worked for Hogeboom's daughter and her husband John Ashley, a well-known judge and patriot.

While working for the Ashley's, Bett would serve food and drinks at many of Mr. Ashley's political meetings. It would be during these many meetings she would overhear remarks and was soon moved by the principles of the equalities of man she heard the patriots speak. It was during this time that the Bill of Rights was discussed, as well as a new constitution of Massachusetts.

Early in the year 1781, Bett went into town one day and stopped by the office of Theodore Sedgwick, a young lawyer she had seen at many of Ashley's political meetings. It would be here that Bett asked Sedgwick to sue for her freedom.

Because Bett could not read nor write, Sedgwick asked her why she believed she should be free. In a determined voice, Bett answered, "By keepin' still and mindin' things." She further went on to explain that she had heard that all people were born equal, and after thinking long and hard about this, she concluded that she should try "whether she did not come in among them."

Although Sedgwick and Ashley were friends, and in spite of the fact that Sedgwick had argued cases before Ashley, he decided to take Bett's case.

In the law suit, Sedgwick based the case on two arguments. The first was that there was no law in Massachusetts that ever established slavery, and secondly, that even if such a law existed, it would be annulled by the new Constitution. Having asked for and received a trial by jury, after a short deliberation, they found in her favor, and Bett was given her freedom.

John Ashley appealed the case, but before it could be heard, he dropped the appeal a few months later when the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled in another case that slavery was unconstitutional in that state.

Now free, Bett changed her last name to "Freeman," and continued to work as a domestic, although now paid, for the remainder of her life with the Sedgwick household. In 1785, the family moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where Bett died on December 28, 1829.

A beloved member of their family, she is buried in the Stockbridge cemetery at the central ring of the plot reserved for the Sedgewick family. Bett is also the only black person to have been buried in the Stockbridge cemetery.

A Great Day

Labels: ,

Sup y'all I'm back at it like a crack addict with a bad habit.

Since it's Black History Month I will be dropping some jewels throughout the month. The picture above if you don't know is the famous Art Lang picture Great Day in Harlem. The first major influence in any true musician has to be the Harlem Renaissance. It was the a major movement in black independence and expression. From the poetry of Langston Hughes to the melodious voices of Ella Fritzgerald and Billie Holiday down to the artwork of Aaron Douglas made everyone look at blacks and even the world different. If it wasn't for them there wouldn't be music today or culture today.

What's up folks I know it's been a while but I am back.

I have been out and about checking on some things. I have noticed something some crazy things, like the music industry is crazy. It's a rough world out there watch yourself artist cause if you aren't careful you could be in a situation that's no good for anyone but the label. With that being said here are two people who had there hay day in different time periods but when they did they had the world on smash. Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Berry Gordy, Jr.

The similarities are quite amazing. They both started with nothing and built empires Diddy with Bad Boy and Gordy with Motown. Both had a star they revolved the company around. They also generated an array of talented artist. But the most important thing they have in common is greed. They are living proof of anything for a dollar!

"Industry rule #4080 - Record company people are shady" ~ Q-Tip

These two men proved that on numerous occasions. They use words like family and togetherness, but what they really mean is everyone for themselves and get what you can while you can. Combs has had public disputes on how he kept his books and publishing. Bringing out such talents and turning his back on them like Ma$e, The L.O.X., Black Rob, Craig Mack, Total, B5, and the list goes on. It was not until last year that Ma$e got out his "contract" with Combs. He had to bum rush a radio station and put him the spot to release him out his deal. The rapper Po (formerly known as Shine) did a 9 year bid for Combs and didn't receive not one iota of help. Of all the artist that put out hits on Bad Boy how many are relevant today? So when he say it's an dynasty look at it again and say really?

Gordy is equally if not worse than afore mentioned Combs. Gordy had a hit factory literally Motown was known as the "Hit Factory U.S.A." with talents like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5, Diana Ross, The Temptations, and many many more. Gordy could care less about his artist, he treated Motown like the factories it was surrounded by in Detroit. When one act left he had three more waiting to take their place. So with odds like that made people expendable. Example when Florence Ballard left The Supremes Gordy didn't sweat it he just found Cindy Birdsong who looked freakishly similar to Ballard and the hit kept coming. There are so many other stories I could really write a book anout it. The Motown sound changed music and lives by bridging the gap between Blacks and Whites in the 1960's but of all the artist that were on Motown who didn't write their own material did their story end well?

With all that being said be careful of the deals you make and the people you deal with. Everyone is out for themselves. Do like Charles Hamilton says " don't go in there looking for deals, look for situations".

When cool was King

Labels: , , , ,

Hidey-Ho people. It's that time for another trip into the labyrinth that is my mind.

Around this corner is showgirls, smoked filled rooms, singing, dancing, Vegas, and drinking. No I aint talking about a Snoop concert I am talking about The Rat Pack. The Rat Pack consisted of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. In the sixties these guys were kings! Nothing got done without their say so. Don't think so huh? Well they were a key part in getting John F. Kennedy elected. They brought the people to Vegas and selling out everytime. Segragation was still an issue in Las Vegas in the 60's until The Rat Pack refused to perform until black entertainers got equal share.

These crooners were in the time where you had to have game to get the girl. They cursed and drank and just made fun of themselves. Any barriers were knocked down in their act with 2 Jewish guys and 3 Italians(Sammy converted to Judism). It was a time of fun and carefree joy. They were friends and they stuck together until their deaths.

They influenced countless generations of people:

  1. The Brat Pack(1980's) - Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald.
  2. The Frat Pack(1990's-2000's) - Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaugh, Steve Carell, Owen Wilson and Luke Wilson.
  3. Jay-Z - Calling Roc-a-fella Records the New Rat Pack, "The Rap Pack, I'm Sinatra, Dame's Sam Davis, Big's the smart one on the low like Dean Martin" and "We Rat Pack niggaz, let Sam tap dance on you/Then, I Sinatra shot ya God damn you". With his overloard mentality many are calling Jay-Z the modern day Frank Sinatra.
  4. Movies - Ocean's Eleven is a remake The Rat Pack did in the 60's and the character Johnny Fontaine in The Godfather was based on Frank Sinatra.

No moral today just wanted to say think out the box and when you things do it your way not anyone elses.

"A friend is never an imposition" ~Frank Sinatra

Theme Music

Hidey-Ho from the top of the world, it's your boy back at it again.

Next to music I love movies. All types of movies from action to drama. What I really like about movies is the music lol. The dialog keeps you compelled but it is the music that brings it to life. Just think about it would The Godfather be the same without the horns in the beginning or would Ghostbusters be the same without their catch-phrase "who you gonna call?". So next time you are watching a dumb movie don't turn it off listen to the music.

"La Guarachera de Cuba"(The Rythm of Cuba)

Labels: , , , , , , ,

Hidey-Ho de la cima del mundo. Es tu hijo Molo.

It's Tuesday time for a trip in the past cause we never know where we going, if you don't know where we been. Our trip takes us to the sultry festive and vibrant Cuba in the 1930's.
So with that said here we go. I was chilling singing one of my favorite songs from when I was little "Guantanamera" and it had me thinking, I must of have heard ten versions of that song I don't know who sings it. The only person I could think of is Wyclef but I know it was sung way before him. Then my illustrious brain trust(Sarcarrogance Headquarters) looked at me with a WTF glare. In unison they said "You never heard of Celia Cruz?". I felt like I got pants on the 50 yard of the Super Bowl at halftime lol.  So now I am on a mission for knowledge and what I found out was staggering.

Early Life
Celia Cruz (born in Havana, Cuba as Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso on October 21, 1925- July 16, 2003) was a Cuban salsa singer, and was one of the most successful Salsa performers of the 20th century, with twenty-three gold albums to her name. She was renowned internationally as the "Queen of Salsa" as well as "La Guarachera de Cuba". Celia Cobo of Billboard Magazine once said
"Cruz is indisputably the best known and most influential female figure in the history of Cuban music." - Billboard Magazine
Cruz once said in an interview:
"If I had a chance I wouldn't have been singing and dancing, I would be a teacher just like my dad wanted me to be". - Celia Cruz
Cruz was born in the diverse Santos Suárez neighborhood of La Habana, Cuba. She is the second child of fourteen children born to Catalina Alfonso and Simón Cruz. Simón worked in the railroads as a stoker, and Catalina took care of the extended family.

Cruz' early influences were a who's who in Cubano music like Paulina Alvarez, Fernando Collazo, Abelardo Barroso, Pablo Quevedo, Arsenio Rodriguez, and Arcaño y sus Maravillas. When she was a teenager, her aunt took her and her cousin to cabarets to sing, but her father encouraged her to keep attending school, in hopes that she would become a Spanish language teacher. However, one of her teachers told her that as an entertainer she could earn in one day what most Cuban teachers earned in a month. Cruz began singing in Havana's radio station Radio Garcia-Serra's popular "Hora del Té" daily broadcast, she sang the tango "Nostalgias", (and won a cake as first place) often winning cakes and also opportunities to participate in more contests. Her first recordings were made in 1948 in Venezuela. Before that, Cruz had recorded for radio stations.

Career Breakthrough
She made her breaktrough when a member of the Sonora Matancera orchestra left and asked Cruz to replace them. At first the audience didn't like her but her talent can't be denied. She stayed with the orchestra for 15 years. They ended up changing their name to "Café Con Leche" (Coffee with Milk). So after she was known for tradmark shout "¡Azúcar!", which is sugar in spanish. The catch phrase started as the punch line for a joke Cruz used to tell frequently at her concerts.
Once, she ordered cafe cubano (Cuban coffee) in a restaurant in Miami. The waiter asked her if she'd like sugar, and she replied that, since he was Cuban, he should know that you can't drink Cuban coffee without it! After having told the joke so many times, Cruz eventually dropped the joke and greeted her audience at the start of her appearances with the punch line alone. In her later years, she would use the punch line a few times, to later say:

"No les digo más 'Azúcar', pa' que no les dé diabetes!" which means "I won't say 'Sugar' anymore so that you won't get diabetes". lol.
Credits
In her career Celia Cruz recorded 72 albums

Has 23 Gold records

She has worked with legends like Tito Fuente, Johnny Pacheco, Robby Draco Rosa, Larry Harlow, etc...

Recieved National Medal of Art from President Bill Clinton

In 1990, Cruz won a Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance - Ray Barretto & Celia Cruz - Ritmo en el Corazon.

She later recorded an anniversary album with la Sonora Matancera.

In 1992, she starred with Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas in the film The Mambo Kings. In 2001, she recorded a new album, on which Johnny Pacheco was one of the producers.

On July 16, 2002, Cruz performed to a full house at the free outdoor performing arts festival Central Park SummerStage in New York City. During the performance she sang, "Bemba Colora." A live recording of this song was subsequently made available in 2005 on a commemorative CD honoring the festival's then 20 year history entitled, "Central Park SummerStage: Live from the Heart of the City." In early 2003, she had surgery to correct knee problems that she had for a few years, and she intended to continue working indefinitely. She had weight issues. Celia Cruz appeared on the Dionne Warwick album My Friends and Me 2006.

Her Death
On July 16, 2003, she died of a cancerous brain tumor at her home in Fort Lee, New Jersey. She was survived by her husband Pedro Knight, who died February 3, 2007.

After her death in New Jersey, her body was taken to Miami to lie in state in downtown Miami's Freedom Tower, where more than 200,000 of her South Florida fans paid their final respects. Her body was returned to New Jersey where tens of thousands of fans paid tribute to her at the funeral home. A service was held for her in St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. She was interred in a private mausoleum at the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx; an epilogue in her autobiography notes that, in accordance with her wishes, Cuban soil that she had saved from a visit to Guantánamo Bay was used in her entombment.

In February 2004, her latest album Regalo del Alma, won a posthumous award at the Premios Lo Nuestro for best Salsa release of the year. It was announced in December 2005 that a musical called "Assuca" would open in Tenerife before touring the world. The name comes from Cruz's well-known catch phrase of "¡Azúcar!".

On June 4, 2004, the heavily-Cuban-populated town of Union City, New Jersey, heralded its annual Cuban Day Parade by dedicating its new Celia Cruz Park at 31st Street and Bergenline Avenue, with Cruz's widower, Pedro Knight, present. The park features a sidewalk star in Cruz's honor, There are four other similar dedications to Cruz around the world. Stars were later added to the park in honor of Tito Puente, Spanish language television news anchor Rafael Pineda, salsa pioneer Johnny Pacheco, and Benny More, merengue singer Joseíto Mateo, salsa singer La India, and Cuban musician Israel "Cachao" Lopez.

On May 18, 2005, the National Museum of American History, administered by the Smithsonian Institution and located in Washington, D.C., opened "¡Azúcar!", an exhibit celebrating the life and music of Celia Cruz. The exhibit highlights important moments in Cruz's life and career through photographs, personal documents, costumes, videos, and music.

With this new found knowledge and respect I will sing with pride "Guantananera". So Adios mi amigos!

I was having a discussion with some friends of mines and we were talking music. During the debate we touched on several topics, some we agree on like greatest rapper(Jay-Z) and greatest era of music(1970's). Then we got to bands that's where it got iffy. So three grown men are arguing about the best band ever. One person who is white said Aerosmith reasonable choice, my other friend who is Indian said The Rolling Stones again another logical choice. This is where I get a little hot, how can you talk bands or music for that matter without mentioning George, Paul, Ringo, and John? Better known to the world as The Beatles. They are the standard for music groups. I know this is cliche' and I hate myself for using this but they are your favorite artist's favorite artist. Since their American emergence in the early 60's they have set the world on fire. The Beatles single handily killed the Doo Wop era of the 50's.

I remember when I first heard them I was 6 years old living in Germany. We were cleaning up the house and my mom put on The White Album I been hooked ever since. From Yellow Submarine to Helter Skelter every song was perfect. With George Harrison on bass, Ringo Star on drums, and with John Lennon and Paul McCarthy writing and singing the song it was a perfect combination. Every genre of music has took from their sound. What group you know has a 5 year stretched named after them? There isn't a Stones Era or Aerosmith time, but there was a Beatlemania. If you ask a Beatles fan a REAL Beatles fan everyday for a week straight I guarantee you will get 7 different answers. That's because you can't single out one song, it truly is what you are feeling at the time. Even after their break-up and long after they all pass on there will always be The Beatles.

This is in honor of the celebration tonight on VH1 for Def Jam/Island Records. Whether you want to admit it or not there really wouldn't be no music without Def Jam. All these independent labels owe it all to Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. Not only did they open the the door for hip hop and music in general, they knocked the door off the hinges. You don't believe me, name your top ten rap songs, club bangers, or even artist I guarantee there is at least five Def Jam/Island affiliates on your list. They changed the game for R&B, Hip Hop, and even Rock n Roll. They brought us music to a generation of kids now grown ups that was looking for an identity. They called it a fad but we showed them we changed fashion, language, and even changed the world. (How you think Obama got elected?) Def Jam may not got him elected but they layed the foundation that changed the world. So thank you Russell and Rick for everything you have done. Thanks for Krush Groove, Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Phat Farm, Jay-Z, and a whole lifetime of memories. Not to mention what music has to come. So to all the Gucci Mane's, Master P's, Lil Wayne's, and all the others who started their own labels need to bow down and praise Def Jam Recordings.
